CUTTING EDGE ORTHOPEDICS

IN-OFFICE NEEDLE ARTHROSCOPY

In-office needle arthroscopy that provides cutting edge visualization capabilities in the office setting to determine the source of your shoulder and knee pain. Dr. Mc Millan is one of the worlds’ leaders in in-office needle arthroscopy. This procedure allows your surgeon to be able to look inside your shoulder or knee with a tiny “spy camera” while you are awake. In as little as a few minutes, the source of your pain can be figured out and a personalized treatment plan can be initiated. The procedure is done with local anesthesia and provides the surgeon the same view he would have in the operating room. You are able to walk out under your own power and require no special medications post-procedure.

One of the greatest benefits to this technology is the value of time saved. Rather than waiting 2 to 3 weeks to get an MRI and return for your results, you can oftentimes get your answers in the very same appointment. For patients who are claustrophobic, have pacemakers or other metal in their bodies that preclude an MRI, the ability to undergo a needle arthroscopy can be life-changing. In many instances, the procedure is also cost effective when compared to the cost of getting an MRI. For more information on if in-office needle arthroscopy is right for you, contact Dr. Mc Millan for an evaluation.

RAPID BIOLOGIC ROTATOR CUFF REPAIRS

The Regeneten Bio-Inductive Implant is a collagen implant derived from bovine Achilles tendon, with highly purified, highly porous, highly oriented design. This implant stimulates the body’s natural healing response to support new tendon growth and disrupt disease progression It is clinically proven to reliably induce new tendon-like tissue and promote tendon healing. The implant gradually absorbs within six months, leaving a layer of new tendon-like tissue to biologically augment the existing tendon.

Dr. Mc Millan was the first surgeon to perform this procedure in New Jersey and has published and lectured, both nationally and internationally, on the benefits of using a bio-inductive implant for accelerated rotator cuff repairs. Furthermore, he was privileged to be a part of the REBUILD Registry which was a national multi-center research endeavor validating the benefits and outcomes of this procedures. In particular, for high grade partial rotator cuff tears, the data has demonstrated a quicker return to function, less sling time post-operatively, a decreased need for opioid medications post-procedure, and a faster return to work. This bio-inductive implant has also been used to fix other tendon problems in the body, including the patella and quadriceps tendons. To find out if a bio-inductive implant can help your rotator cuff repair please contact Dr. Mc Millan for an evaluation.

OPIOID SPARING SURGERY

WHAT IS OPIOID SPARING SURGERY?

Choices Matter. In particular, your choices matter when it comes to having a say in your personalized recovery from surgery. Much has changed in the past few years and the fear associated with post-operative pain is being lessened thanks in part to the collaboration of patients and surgeons like Dr. Mc Millan. From young high school athletes to active seniors, no two patients have the same journey through injury, so why should your pain be treated the same?

Whether you require surgery or are dealing with an orthopedic issue in a non-surgical manner, Dr. Mc Millan and his team want to work with you minimize your need for potentially dangerous opioid medications, while still doing our very best to keep you comfortable. While Dr. Mc Millan realizes certain instances require opioid medications, he strives to stay current with cutting-edge alternatives for his patients.

Non-surgical options are plentiful and include:

  • non-narcotic medication
  • traditional steroid injections
  • NEWER Long Acting Steroid Injections (Diabetic Safe)
  • MLS Cold Laser Therapy treatments for acute and chronic pain
  • Biologic Injections (PRP, Stem Cell, and Amnion)
  • Cryo-freezing of Nerves around the knee for Osteo-arthritis Treatment

Surgical Opioid Sparing Techniques include:

  • Long Acting Liposomal Bupivacaine Interscalene Nerve Blocks (Exparel®)
  • Localized Liposomal Bupivacaine Injections for post-surgical pain (Exparel®)
  • Multi-modal Pain Management
  • Cryo-freezing of Nerves around the knee for Pre- and Post-Surgical Pain Relief
